How it all began......
It all started when we were in India working on a project for street children for a charity called Youthreach. We were inspired by the richness and colours of the saris worn by Indian women - even the poorest women in villages in Rajasthan - and we bemoaned the lack of fabrics and elegance like that in England.In 2002 we found an amazing lady who sources antique and new saris from around the country and worked with her creating clothes that would appeal to a Western market.
To show off the richness texture and vibrancy of the fabrics to their best effect we keep our designs as simple as possible. The antique saris we work with are generally hand picked from rural villages - agents are sent across the country into specialist markets which are often prohibited to anyone outside their particular community.
Through our work with Youthreach we came into contact with some smaller rural NGOs making beautiful products. We sell a range of tasar silk shawls and stoles hand woven by tribal people in Bihar, one of the poorest states in India. And this year we are selling tweed waistcoats made by local communities in Northern India.
India is also home to silver and a wealth of semi precious stones, some ubiquitous and others rare. To form our jewellery collection we spend days in dusty backrooms surrounded by strings of jewels piecing together a myriad of shapes colours and sizes. We endeavour to complement the richness of poppadom clothes in our designs.
